What Makes the Moab and the Moab 2 Different

You are likely already aware of the great features of the original Moab. But you are also wondering how the Moab compares to the Moab 2 and the most important design features.

Below, we have outlined the most important improvements and made up on the Moab within Moab 2.

Performance Suede:

The Moab 2 features a new performance suede upper. This new suede upper has a higher quality look and feel. It is also more durable than the original Moab.

Please keep in mind that the Moab 2 Gore-Tex version does not feature this performance suede. It is replaced by a breathable Gore-Tex membrane.

Vibrant colors:

Due to the higher quality suede, the earthy colors actually stand out better. They are more vibrant and look more attractive to the eye in the Moab 2. The colorways have also been updated to feature modern and attractive colors.

Durable materials:

The Moab 2 is generally made of more durable materials than the original Moab.

Protective rubber cap:

The Moab 2 has a protective rubber cap on the toe. This makes those excursions on rocky roads a lot more comfortable. It also protects the toe from wear and tear.

Slip-Resistant:

The outer sole of the Moab 2 has a new patented design by Merrell. It is more slip-resistant and will perform better on slick, wet surfaces.

Redesigned footbed:

The Moab 2 has a redesigned footbed that features more comfortable padding. This means that your ground strikes will be softer and you will be able to go over rocky terrain more comfortably.

This footbed is a blended EVA that offers great zonal arch and heel reinforcements. This gives your foot optimal stability and maximum comfort. The heel has a shock-absorbent cup with Merrell’s own air cushion technology.

Three Different Styles:

The Moab 2 comes in three different styles; Moab 2 Vent, Moab 2 Gore-Tex, and Moab 2 waterproof. There is more on the differences between these styles below.

Merrel Moab 2 Styles

With the Moab 2, you have the choice between three different styles. Each of these styles offers a different level of waterproofing and breathability.

Moab 2 Gore-Tex

The Moab 2 Gore-Tex is 100% waterproof. It completely protects the foot against the rain and puddles. But despite the fact that it is waterproof, is extremely breathable and allows the interior moisture to escape. Instead of the new performance suede upper, it features synthetic leather for better waterproofing.

Moab 2 Waterproof

The Moab 2 is not quite as waterproof as the Gore-Tex version. But it is also more breathable and allows for more heat transfer. This is midway between the Gore-Tex version and the Vent version. It is made of a water-resistant lining, taped seams, and water-repelling fabric.

Moab 2 Vent

The Vent version is not waterproof, but it is very breathable. The heat from within the shoe easily escapes through the mesh panels. If you are going to be doing a lot of hiking in the summer heat, the Moab 2 is an excellent choice. It is the most lightweight out of all three styles.

FAQs about the MOAB and MOAB 2

What is the difference between Moab and Moab 2?

As mentioned above, there are 6 main differences between the original MOAB and the MOAB 2. The MOAB 2 has a Suede upper, more vibrant colors, more durable materials, and a rubber toe cap. Furthermore, it is slip-resistant and offers more support and comfort thanks to the redesigned footbed. Last but not the least, it comes in 3 styles, Gore-Tex, Waterproof, and Vent.

Are Merrell Moab 2 Vent waterproof?

The MOAB 2 Vent is not waterproof as it is designed for hiking and running. If you’re looking for a waterproof MOAB shoe, go for the GORE-TEX. But if you’re looking for more breathability, the Waterproof style offers some water-resistant features.

The Verdict

There is no question that the Moab 2 is simply a higher-end version than the original Moab. The original Moab is over 10 years old, while the Moab 2 uses modern hiking boot technology.

As you have seen above, the Moab 2 has three different styles, each varying on the waterproof meter. Which style one purchases depends on the level of waterproofing needed.

While the Moab 2 Gore-Tex boot is 100% waterproof, the Moab 2 Vent is not waterproof at all but is more lightweight and breathable. If you are looking for something midway between a breathable boot that is not waterproof, and a heavy waterproof boot, perhaps the Moab 2 waterproof is the best choice for you.

Merrell has ensured that all of its bases are covered with varying levels of waterproofing and breathability. It uses modern shoe technology for its new 2017 Moab 2.

Out of all of these boot models, which one do you feel you might prefer? Please leave your comment below, as we would love to hear from you.

  1. I wear the Moab 2 Mid waterproof. I love it! Very comfortable, and my feet don’t get wet in heavy rain. I appreciate your comparison, but would like to know what you think about the Women’s Moab FST ice plus with Artic Grip. I would like the artic grip in a shoe, but since I need a large toe box, and have problem feet (i wear orthotics) I can only wear the Merrell Moab 2. And they don’t make an artic grip model. There are still Merrell Moab FST Ice shoes available even though they are discontinued. Would these be cut on the same last as the Merrell Moab2? thanks in advance for answering!
