Maxpedition Falcon III Review: An Upgrade on the Falcon II

In this review of the Maxpedition Falcon III, we are going to share what we like about this backpack. The Maxpedition Falcon III is basically an upgrade of the Falcon II. They are almost identical in design, but the Maxpedition Falcon III backpack can hold 35 liters of gear. The Maxpedition line of backpacks is known for its highly durable tactical gear, featuring PALS attachments. Using the PALS webbing, you can attached MOLLE compatible pouches to the backpack, which adds extra volume capacity.

Maxpedition Falcon III Overview

Features

  • Volume capacity: 35 liters
  • 3D breathable padded mesh
  • CCW with lockable zippers, fits large pistols
  • Accordion design
  • 1050D nylon
  • Internal seams are taped and finished
  • Paracord zipper pulls

Slim and collapsible

The Maxpedition Falcon III comes with a nice accordion design, which allows for a slimmer profile. While this backpack is not very tall, it does stick out a bit due to its pretty deep compartments. The fact that it has deep compartments means that it allows for more gear to be put in without needing to take up much space on your back.

If you’re not going to be filling this backpack all the way, the accordion design collapses to create a lower profile. This is further helped along by that it has compression straps which you can use to hold your gear stable and get rid of the extra air pockets in the backpack.

Maxpedition Falcon III Usability and comfort

The Maxpedition Falcon III backpack has a breathable mesh covering for the back panel and the shoulder straps. This helps to prevent sweat build up and damage to the backpack. The back panel and shoulder straps are double padded in order to increase comfort. The shoulder straps are extra-wide, which adds to the comfort. Keep in mind that this backpack does not come with a frame, so adding more than 30 pounds of gear may be a bit uncomfortable.

For ease-of-use, there are paracord zipper pulls. These large paracord pulls allow you to open and close the zippers without needing to take off your thick gloves. These are also a nice feature because the backpack can be quite stiff. The stiffness comes from the fact that the backpack is made with thick material that is meant to be durable. If the backpack is stiff, it can be difficult to reach for the zippers without the paracord.

Plenty of pockets

First, we need to point out the fact that unlike the Maxpedition Falcon II, the Maxpedition Falcon III does not come with a dedicated hydration bladder pocket. However, you can still use a 3 liter hydration bladder by putting it into the main compartment. You can still run the hose through the ports on either side. Keep in mind that if you do fill the hydration bladder with water and put it in the main compartment, you may find that I feel a bit of a bulge on your back.

There are three main compartments on this backpack. There’s a main compartment close to the back panel, and there is a top and bottom pocket on the front of the backpack. Inside of these pockets, there are smaller compartments which you can use to store various little items. You can store your compass and map, your folding knife, some pens, and even your tablet. The internal organization of the Maxpedition Falcon III backpack makes this backpack highly versatile. Not only can you use this backpack in order to go hiking, you can also use it for business or school.

High grade of durability

Like all Maxpedition backpacks, the Maxpedition Falcon III comes with a very durable nylon material. It is made with 1050D nylon material that is ultra thick and water-resistant. What gives it its water resistance is the triple layer of polyurethane coating, above and beyond the fact that the nylon is very thick.

You can run this backpack through some water like in a river, and the water will just beat off of the surface. Keep in mind though that this backpack is not completely waterproof.

There is a final Teflon coating above the rest of the layers which is meant to protect against abrasions and dirt build-up. This means that your backpack will be looking new for much longer than regular backpacks. In order to wash it, simply wet a washcloth and run it over the surface of the material. There’ll be no need to put it in a washing machine.

In order to prevent from rips and tears, the seams are taped and finished. Many customers have used this backpack on rough terrain and they find that they do not get any rips or tears. This is perhaps the greatest benefit of using this backpack. You know that it will last you for several years through consistent uses.
