White Ledge and Chocorua Similarities
While the White Ledge and the Chocorua boots have several important differences, they are also very similar in design. Before we get into comparing these boots, we would first like to make a short list of what differentiates these boots from other types of models:
- 100% waterproof: These boots are made to be very waterproof, but by using different materials for each. One provides more waterproofing than the other, as you will see below.
- Full grain leather: As part of their boot shaft, both of these boots use full-grain leather. This makes these boots ultra-durable and resistant to wear and tear.
- Strategically-placed lugs: The placement of lugs on the outer soles of these boots allows for more motion efficiency. This is because these lugs follow the curvature of your foot. These lugs are made by a certain material that is very sticky and provides plenty of traction against the ground.
- Metal eyelets: While both of these boots have all-metal eyelets, these metal eyelets have different designs. This means that the laces will tighten and loosen up a little bit differently depending on the boot. There will be more on this below.
- Insulation: These boots are insulated to keep your feet warm while hiking in cool weather. However, the fabric is also made to be very breathable in order to prevent from sweat build up.
Timberland White Ledge vs Chocorua Comparison
Now that you have a better idea of what makes these boot models so great, we will get into the meat of what features actually make them different. The features listed below are those most often thought of by potential customers when deciding which of these boots to purchase.
- Heel shielding: The Timberland White Ledge has a leather shield along the back of the heels. This helps to protect the heels against wear and tear. The Chocorua does not have as much of a shield on the heel.
- Shaft height: The shaft height is the distance between the top of the shaft of the shoe to the arch of the outsole. The shaft height of the Chocorua is five inches, while the shaft height of the White Ledge is 4.7 inches. Some people prefer the lower shaft due to having a lower ankle bone. However, the higher the shaft, the more protection against rain and puddles.
- Gore-Tex: The Chocorua has a Gore-Tex membrane on the inside of the shoe. It is breathable and 100% waterproof to make your feet super comfortable while walking in muddy waters. The White Ledge boot does not have a Gore-Tex membrane, but it is highly waterproof due to its nifty design. It has waterproof seams and water repelling fabrics.
- Fabric vs leather: The Chocorua has more fabric than the White Ledge on the sides and towards the back of the heel. This provides for more breathability and helps prevent against sweat buildup. But having more leather around the shaft of the boot enhances the durability, as with the White Ledge.
- Eyelet sizes: The eyelets on the Chocorua are larger and are designed in such a way that the laces can be tightened are loosened up more easily. Granted, the White Ledge does have some nice eyelets, but the holes are just not as large. In fact, the White Ledge uses D-rings, which are not as ‘slippery’ as the eyelets of the Chocorua.
- Shock absorption: The Chocorua has more shock absorption than the White Ledge. This is due to its EVA foot bed that gives extra foot support and disperses the shock across the foot. The EVA midsole is made for all day comfort.
