The North Face Resolve jackets are especially made for those who want something that is waterproof and very lightweight. The original Resolve made its debut several years ago, and has had a large following ever since.
Due to the high popularity of the Resolve, The North Face has decided to come out with the Resolve 2. Many are wondering what the actual difference is between these two versions. By looking at the North Face website, one can see that the Resolve 2 looks almost identical to the original Resolve.
Some wonder if some of the features are different. For example, the website states that the Resolve 2 uses the DryVent material or its body. However, the original Resolve used the HyVent. But how are these different? We aim to answer these questions in this North Face Resolve vs Resolve 2 comparison. But first, we will cover the similarities between these jacket versions.

What the Resolve and the Resolve 2 Have in Common
Most of the features of the Resolve and the Resolve 2 are the same. Since the original Resolve was so popular, there was not much of a need to do a major upgrade. Before we get into what the North Face has changed with the Resolve 2, we will outline the major features that these two versions of the Resolve have in common.
-
Waterproof and breathable:
Resolve jackets made to be completely waterproof. The fact that they are also breathable is major plus because not all waterproof jackets can breathe well.
-
Two large pockets:
Both of these versions have two large pockets in which you can place your hands for warmth. You can close them with their zippers to keep your smaller items from falling out.
-
Elasticated cuffs:
The Resolve and the Resolve 2 have the same design for their elasticated cuffs. These cuffs prevent the sleeve from riding up as well as any air from entering that might cause a draft on your forearms.
-
Waist drawstring:
There is a drawstring on the waist so that you can send it down to prevent a draft from going up the jacket.
-
Stowable hood:
You can stow away the hood by rolling it up and zipping it into the pocket around the collar.
-
Inner liner:
There is an inner liner attached to the body to provide a barrier between the skin and the fabric body. This prevents your skin from sticking to the jacket in moist climates. The inner liner also provides an extra barrier of protection against the cold.
-
Fleece-lined collar:
The collar on these jackets is very adept at preventing cold draft from entering the jacket and making you uncomfortable. There is a layer of fleece around the collar so that it does not scratch the neck.
North Face Resolve vs Resolve 2: The Differences
We have previously noted that while the Resolve 2 features the waterproof DryVent material, the original Resolve features the HyVent material. Actually, they are the same waterproof material but under a different label. Just recently, the North Face decided to change the name of the material to DryVent for a reason we do not know about. In fact, the North Face changed the title of the material to DryVent on what was originally their HyVent page. You can see that this is the same page because the URL has ‘HyVent’ at the end of it.
But if the material has not changed, what has? Similar to some of the North Face’s other jacket types, the main difference between the Resolve and the Resolve 2 is the color selection.
The new Resolve 2 jackets have an updated look with modern colors. If you are a sensitive to colors and the way they change in popularity over time, you will see why the Resolve 2 jackets look more modern. This is not to say that the Resolve 2 is definitely better than the original Resolve. You may be more attracted to some of the original Resolve colors. In which case, there is no need to upgrade to the Resolve 2.

The Verdict
While the choice between these two jackets is very subjective, we have a slight preference for the Resolve 2 due to the updated color combinations. Since the original version of the Resolve has been around for a long time, the color choices for the original old reflect the colors that were popular at the time. The new color scheme will appeal to some, while others will not really care all that much. Essentially, these Resolve jackets are the same.
