Maxpedition Falcon II Review: Slim, But With Plenty of Space

This Maxpedition Falcon II review is a military-style backpack that is highly durable with plenty of pockets. It is very similar to the Maxpedition Condor II in that it has plenty of PALS attachments.

Compared to other backpacks this size, it has twice the amount of PALS attachments and twice the amount of space. The PALS webbing allows you to attach MOLLE and ALICE pouches, such as first aid kits and extra compartments. These pouches can be purchased separately on Amazon, which is not required to get full use of the Falcon II.

Maxpedition Falcon-II Backpack (Foliage Green)

One of the reasons why many customers enjoy the Maxpedition line is the fact that the backpacks are made with highly durable materials. The coating on the thick nylon is made to be water-resistant and abrasion-proof. This is simply an all-around high-quality backpack.

Pocket Organization

There are many pockets and attachments on the Falcon II backpack. First, there is a main compartment that measures 18 x 9.5 x 4.75 inches. In front of this main compartment is a middle compartment that has plenty of room as well. And at the very front of the backpack is a top and bottom compartment.

It is useful to note that these compartments are very deep. This is the reason why most people say that although the Falcon II is thought to be a smaller-sized backpack, it does hold a lot of gear. In fact, the volume capacity of this backpack is 25 liters. This is pretty standard for a medium-sized backpack for 2-3 days worth of hiking.

Unlike the vast majority of the backpacks on the market, the Falcon II accommodates two 3 liter water reservoirs. This is double the amount of water from hydration bladders that most backpacks can actually hold. The hydration bladder is sold separately. It is suggested that you use a CamelBak hydration bladder, but most aftermarket hydration bladders will do.

Comfort and Compression

The Falcon II comes with 2.5-inch wide padded shoulder straps. These straps are wider than those of a regular backpack and provide double the padding. This means that your shoulder straps will be nice and cozy on top of your shoulders without applying too much pressure when the backpack is full.

There is also a waist strap that you can use to stabilize the backpack as you walk. Using this waist strap, you can ensure that weight is evenly distributed between your back and your waist. There is a sternum strap along the shoulder in order to stabilize the backpack and ensure that it does not slide off the shoulders.

One of the great things about the Falcon II is the fact that it has compression straps in 3 locations; the top, the bottom, and the front. This means that you will not be roaming around with a saggy backpack. You will have the ability to compress all of your gear, even if your backpack is almost empty.

Will last for Years

The Falcon II has a 1050D coated nylon material. This makes it highly durable, and very water-resistant. The nylon comes triple coated with polyurethane for water resistance. And, in order to protect the surface from abrasion and dust accumulation, there is a final coat of Teflon. This backpack is simple to wash; simply run a wet washcloth over the surface, and remove all of the grime.

The YKK zippers are sturdily built with YKK slides. Most backpacks include YKK slides with generic zippers, but the Falcon II has YKK zippers to boot. This means longer-lasting zippers.

The Verdict

In Falcon II, there is plenty of space for your camping gear, reservoirs, laptop, and textbooks. However, keep in mind that it will not hold an entire week’s worth of survival gear. This is a medium-sized backpack made for 1-2 days of backpacking. That being said, you can have plenty of volume capacity by using MOLLE and ALICE pouches.

If you want a very durable backpack that is camouflaged and has plenty of padding around the shoulders, the Falcon II is a cut above the rest.
